Day 28 and 29: Chillinnnnn
We did not have class on Thursday because we got home so
late from the sertao. Cristina and I decided it would be a good idea to go to
the beach. Michael, Berkeley, and Sara joined us. We were there forever. Cristina
is really dark.
I love going to the beach here. But at the same time it was
really difficult. You see people selling stuff on the beach, even young
children. It’s really hard for me to turn them down. I am so soft. Everything makes
me cry, even just watching the home and gardening network on tv makes me cry. So,
seeing the poverty that the people here go through every day, it really does
take a toll on me.
On Friday we had class. I did my presentation on Pedro
Americo. He was a fantastic artist. His
paintings are the images that many Brazilians and scholars recognize as images
of Brazil. For example, the Tiradentes painting, depicting Tiradentes quartered
and put on display in the plaza. I hope my presentation was not awful. I am not
the best at Portuguese, and probably the worst at presenting. I will probably
never get over stage freight.
Later that day Cristina and I caught up on homework and got
ready for our field trip. We later watched Spiderman. It was really interesting
because we watched it in English with Portuguese subtitles. There were not very
many people in the theater. Most Brazilians watch movies with a voice over. The
people who watch it in English are probably those who are more educated,
because they speak English, or they just hate voice overs and prefer reading
the words.
Either way it was a really calm two days, before really
exciting field trips!
