Day 22: BEACH
During class we discussed the important things that we have
learned in the internship. I think almost everyone agreed that the things we
enjoyed the least were things out of our control, for example the buses and
organization. Everyone enjoys the internship from what I heard, and we are all
learning a lot, not only about Brazilians but about the way to interact with
people outside our culture and with each other.
There is a bus strike going on. The drivers want a raise of
30%, but that’s not happening so there is limited transportation for us,
especially those in Piedade, the buses already take an hour for us to catch.
Vanessa let us have the day off.
We brought our swimming suits with us to class, and changed
in the bathrooms.
We spent about three hours on the beach. Most of the time
was on the shore tanning, because the beach here has a ton of sharks. We have
to be careful and aware of our surroundings at all times.
The best thing that happened was Mitch and Matt, two boys
from the study abroad, are super white and they were asleep tanning. People would
walk by them and say galego or gringo, meaning white guys. But the best part
was that these two women were taking pictures of the beach and all of a sudden
one of them stands in between Mitch and Matt and starts posing and taking
pictures! It was so funny.
It was a really nice day. Later that night I went to the
mall with the family. I bought new shoes. Shoes are a huge deal in Brazil. The women
always have nice shoes on. They may be wearing just tank tops and jeans, but
their shoes are always beautiful. Then we ate Brazilian sushi, again this is an
example of globalization.
The sushi was not in a roll form, but the seaweed was in a
ice cream cone shape and the sushi was stuffed into the cone, it was still delicious.
I love sushi.
