Day 17: A quadrillion quadrilhas
In the morning Cristina and I went to the beach and had acai
bowls. Acai is a very popular Brazilian fruit. It is really expensive to buy
things with acai in the United States because it is said to be a super fruit,
helps with all sorts of illnesses. Well, it is delicious in ice cream form.
Later that night we went to Caruaru. It is a city about 2
hours away from Recife. It is literally in the middle of nowhere. We told the
maids we were going, and they got super excited and said that that lace was a
party, and now I understand them.
We first went to another artisan area. I bought a few
things, and a few gifts for friends. The ceramics were pretty cheap I thought.
Later we got back on the bus and started going to the
central area of the city, where the quadrilhas were going to be held, again
that is a Brazilian square dance. It was packed with people. It was also,
incredibly loud. There were concerts, and street vendors, and rides for the children.
It reminded me of the Miami Fair, only more Brazilian, and less elephant ears.
The whole reason why we went was to see the quarilhas. It was
interesting to see the intricate customs and the choreographed dance. It is
clear that forro music is really important to these people of the northeast, it
is part of their culture and of who they are, and they are proud of it.
I really enjoyed the party atmosphere of Caruaru, and seeing
what people like to do in their spare time, but I am defiantly not a good
partier, I was tired out quickly! It was fun though.
less elephant ears?! sad. its my favorite part!
